I’m Peter Mitchell, the owner of Mitchell Trade Consulting Ltd.

I’m a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) who practices in the customs and trade area.

I focus on providing training and consulting services for importers who do not have a full time customs specialist. The primary responsibility of the person who handles customs is likely something else, often finance or logistics. My job is to make sure that they and their customs broker have all the information necessary to accurately determine the tariff classification, valuation and origin of imported goods.

Brokers operate in a time sensitive, volume business that is focused on complete documentation and prompt release at the border. They have a lot of knowledge but not a lot of time to ask probing questions. I get to know my client’s business and provide the training and ongoing support to help their customs person recognize when an import transaction has implications that may not be apparent on the invoice, manifest and other entry documents.

This site consists mainly of a series of articles on customs and trade matters designed to provide basic knowledge in a format that is easy to read and understand.  Feel free to browse and contact me if you have questions. The site also has brief descriptions of my professional background and the specific services I provide.
